The first line of a reply to an angry thread
When a thread gets heated, the first sentence of your reply decides how the rest of it gets read. Open by defending yourself and every line after that reads as defense too.
Opening with their concern, in their words, lands differently. "You're worried the delay hits your team's numbers" is a lot easier to take in than "To clarify, we never said..."
Then shrink the thread. Pick the one issue that actually needs a decision and park the side arguments. If six people are copied and two of them decide, take it back to those two.
Finish with one thing somebody can go and do, and name the one item that's still unresolved. A vague "let's align" just restarts the argument tomorrow morning.
The longer version, with the research behind it: how to calm down an email thread that's getting heated.
